Sitting on the eastern edge of Waikiki’s coastline, is Diamond Head State Monument. The landmark is most prominently known for its historic hiking trail and stunning coastal views. Sea turtles can be seen while hiking the trail. It’s during this time that you might see humpback whales from the trail.
The broad crater was formed 300,000 years ago during a single, explosive eruption that sent ash and fine particles. As these materials settled they cemented together into a rock, called tuff, creating the crater. The flourishing vegetation, waterfalls, and birds were introduced in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The trail to the summit was originally built as part of Oahu’s defense system for military use, which boasts some of the bunkers and navigational lighthouses dating back to 1917. The hike consists of a concrete walkway, designed to reduce erosion before shifting to its natural tuff surface, the ascent continues up steep stairs and through a 225-foot tunnel to enter the Fire Control Station completed in 1911. Built on the summit, the station directed artillery fire from batteries in Waikiki and Fort Ruger.
Proceeds from both of these activities will go towards ECS’s Free the Science initiative which will make our Digital Library free for all authors to publish in and for all readers to access. Learn more here.
