About Naoki Ota
Naoki Ota has been CTO at 24M Technologies, Inc. since 2012. A recognized global expert in lithium-ion batteries, he helped develop the technology in Japan 25 years ago. Ota co-founded Quallion, the first lithium-ion manufacturer in the United States serving the medical and aerospace industries. Subsequently, as CTO and COO of Enerdel, he led the HEV, PHEV, EV, and grid storage product lines and manufacturing factory operations in US, Korea and China. Ota developed a 1GWh production capability. He holds a BSc in Applied Chemistry from Osaka Prefecture University.
At the 236th ECS Meeting in October, Ota will present “Novel Cell and Manufacturing Architecture Enabling Next-Generation, High Energy Density Chemistries.”
Ota’s work at 24M focuses on reinventing the lithium-ion battery to enable low-cost energy storage. In February 2019, 24M announced the development and delivery of commercially viable, high energy density lithium-ion cells. Energy densities exceeding 250 watt-hours per kilogram (Wh/kg), the current state-of-the-art industry benchmark for EV applications, were achieved by using their SemiSolid lithium-ion battery design.
Abstract
Historically, the current lithium-ion cell manufacturing and product design platform was not optimized for lithium-ion. Fundamentally, it has not changed in over 28 years. More reliable, low cost, and high performance cells are required to achieve industry goals. The semi-solid electrode platform optimized for lithium-ion technologies brings us to the next level.
