About Ernest B. Yeager

Ernest B. Yeager (1924-2002) dedicated 50 years to advancing the field of electrochemical science and mentoring and advising students at Case Western University (CWRU), where he single-handedly established an electrochemical science and technology powerhouse. He and his students are credited with the initial development of the sodium amalgam-oxygen fuel cell. In addition to many published articles, Prof. Yeager was Editor of The Electrochemical Society Monograph, Electrode Processes.

After receiving his PhD in Physical Chemistry (1946) from CWRU, he joined the faculty as an Instructor in the Chemistry Department, then Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, Professor, Department Chair, Director of the Ultrasonics Research Laboratory, and Chair of the Frontiers in Chemistry series. Prof. Yeager was Director of the Case Center for Electrochemical Sciences (1976-1991), which was renamed the Ernest B. Yeager Center for Electrochemical Sciences in his honor in 1994. An active Society member from 1949 on, Prof. Yeager served as ECS Theoretical Division Chair (1955-1957), ECS Cleveland Section Chair (1954-1955), and ECS President (1965). He became an Honorary Member in 1977 and received the 1980 ECS Edward Goodrich Acheson Award and the 1992 ECS Vittorio de Nora Award.
