Presented: Fall meeting, odd years
The Carl Wagner Memorial Award was established in 1980 to recognize mid-career achievement, excellence in research areas of interest to the Society, and significant contributions in the teaching or guidance of students or colleagues in education, industry, or government.
Eligibility criteria
The award recipient has made significant research achievements in areas of interest to the Society and contributed strongly to the guidance and development of students or associates in education, industry, or government.
Candidate requirements:
- The research and teaching or guidance being recognized should encompass interdisciplinarity.
- The nominee must have initiated their career (i.e., received their final degree and/or started work as a professional in their field) between 13 to 25 years prior to the deadline of the award nomination.
- Extensions to this timeline for special reasons (e.g., parental leave, military service, long-term illness, etc.), are considered on a case-by-case basis. For confidentiality, the justification for extension must be submitted to ECS Awards separately from the nomination.
Nomination guidelines
Nominations are considered for two consecutive award cycles.
Membership in The Electrochemical Society is not a requirement. However, nominators and endorsers should be ECS members.
A complete nomination package includes:
- Completed Electronic Nomination Form
- At least two, but no more than five supporting letters (one page in length)
- Additional documents that may be included:
– Candidate’s curriculum vitae
– Publications list
– Other pertinent information that supports and strengthens the nomination
Award
The award consists of:
- Framed scroll;
- Sterling medal;
- Complimentary meeting registration for the award recipient and companion
- Dinner in the recipient’s honor during the designated meeting;
- Life Membership in The Society.
- Eligibility for reimbursement of up to USD $1,000 in travel expenses.
The recipient receives the award in person at the designated meeting of the Society.
Recipient obligations
At the designated meeting, the recipient delivers a general address to the Society on a subject related to the contributions for which the award is being presented.
About Carl Wagner
The award commemorates Carl Wagner, a dedicated teacher and man of outstanding scientific achievement with important contributions in all areas of interest to the Society. Prof. Wagner received the Society’s first Olin Palladium Award.
