The in-person fifth Organic Battery Days (OBD) 2022 Workshop continues a series of OBD events that started in Uppsala, Sweden, in 2017. This is the first time the OBD Workshop takes place in the United States! Building on the success of previous meetings, this year’s in-person event aims to strengthen communication and cooperation among experts from academic organizations, research institutes, and manufacturing companies, as well as to exchange knowledge and experience on the most recent developments in the field of organic batteries.
The transition from fossil fuels to clean energy sources creates an exponential demand for high-performance batteries. The leading battery technology based on lithium ion chemistry relies on critical mineral resources, including cobalt, nickel, and lithium, elements that are at risk of disruption due to supply chain, cost, and environmental issues. Organic materials made of abundant light-main-group elements via low-energy processes capable of storing lithium and plentiful monovalent and multivalent metals are emerging as sustainable and low-cost alternatives to transition metal compounds for energy storage.
