The ECS General Student Poster Session competitions and awards are students’ opportunities to shine—and have their work reviewed by judges who are world-renowned leaders in the fields of electrochemistry and solid state science and technology. The awards identify and celebrate outstanding research by students from around the world, and help distinguish stand-out students for future academic and employment opportunities.
The Award
The ECS General Student Poster Session Awards are given to the best poster presentations at Society meetings. The award was established in 1993 to acknowledge:
- Quality and thoroughness of the candidate’s work;
- Originality and independence of the candidate’s contributions;
- Significance and timeliness of research results;
- Depth of understanding of the research topic and its relationship to the fields of interest to The Electrochemical Society.
If warranted by the quality of the presentations, one award is directed to the field of electrochemical science and technology and the other to solid state science and technology.
Nomination Deadline: Abstract submission deadline, bi-annual
Presented: Spring and fall meeting, annual
Recipient qualifications
Award recipients are students pursuing degrees at any college or university worldwide. Past recipients may reapply. Application qualifications are not waived if no candidate qualifies for the award at a given Society meeting. Candidates must submit the following to the General Society Student Poster Session Chair by the published date:
- Proof of enrollment in a degree-granting program (e.g., a letter from their thesis adviser);
- A meeting abstract describing the research presented in the poster.
Candidates must prepare a poster for presentation at the Society meeting where judging takes place. A student author must present the poster.
Eligibility criteria and instructions
To be eligible for poster awards, follow these steps:
- Submit an abstract to the Z01 General Student Poster Session.
- If accepted into Z01, upload a one-page digital poster file by the deadline provided in the acceptance email.
- Directions on how to upload the one-page digital poster file are provided in the acceptance email.
- The one-page digital poster file can be a draft if your research/poster is not finalized by the submission deadline.
- Only PDF files are accepted.
- Do not upload a video presentation file or presentation slides.
- Round 1 Judging
- First-round judges only review the one-page digital poster file.
- Round 2 Judging
- Only presenting authors attending the ECS biannual meeting General Student Poster Session in person are considered for awards.
- Posters must be hung before 1700h on the day of Z01 General Student Poster Session Round 2 in-person judging.
- Round 2 in-person poster judging begins at 1800h on the day of Z01 General Student Poster Session with formal presentations by the presenting authors.
- Judges only visit with finalists—not with anyone eliminated in Round 1 Judging.
- Award announcement and presentation
- Winners are announced, and awards presented, at the next day’s General Poster Session from approximately 1815-1830h.
About the award
All award recipients receive a scroll. The presenting student author of each winning poster receives a cash prize. The General Student Poster Session organizers and judges determine the amount of the award.
