ECS Releases Statement on Climate Change

Pennington, NJ – The Earth’s climate is changing, which is mainly driven by human activity—primarily the burning of fossil fuels for power generation, transportation, and various industrial processes. The Electrochemical Society (ECS) affirms the scientific consensus and acknowledges that climate change is an immediate, grave, and existential threat to all life on Earth and must be addressed urgently. On October 9, 2022, ECS adopted a Climate Change Statement at the meeting of the Executive Committee, pledging to support its membership in finding solutions for providing clean, affordable, and sustainable sources for powering and moving an interconnected world. Furthermore, ECS pledges to advocate for integrating science in the definition and implementation of effective strategies to combat climate change. The Society is steadfast in its commitment to disseminating only truthful, accurate, and verified research and data in addressing this grand global challenge.

“This statement is an acknowledgement of the dire consequences of inaction and the critical importance of our members’ research,” said Christopher Jannuzzi, ECS Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer. “The Society’s members are passionately developing the next generation of technological solutions for the challenges facing our planet. Nowhere is this more critical than in our efforts as scientists, researchers, and engineers to find solutions for providing clean, affordable, and sustainable sources for powering and moving an interconnected world.”

The statement builds on ECS’s mission, vision, existing policies, and efforts to advance theory and practice at the forefront of electrochemical and solid state science and technology, and allied subjects. The Society strives to accelerate scientific discovery and innovation by providing open access to its world-class technical content. ECS supports diversity, inclusion, and climate justice, which require connection and collaboration across geographic, economic, and disciplinary boundaries to succeed.
