Symposium focus: The Eighteenth International Symposium on Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFC-XVIII) continues its great tradition as the largest international symposium on solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) and solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) technology since its inception in 1989. Returning to in person after the virtual SOFC XVII, it provides an international forum for the presentation and discussion of the latest research and developments on SOFCs, SOECs, and related technologies. Papers are solicited on all aspects of these technologies from fundamental science to deployed systems and industry/governmental programs.
The symposium begins with the opening ceremony including the ECS High-Temperature Energy, Materials, & Processes Subhash Singhal Award presentation, plenary presentations of the national and regional projects on SOFC-SOEC from the U.S., EU, and Asia (Japan and Korea), and includes a reception and conference banquet.
Status reports from major companies and academic universities are planned for hot topics on SOFCs and SOECs. Following is a partial list of topics to be addressed:
(1) Materials for cell components (e.g., electrolyte, electrodes, interconnection, and seals)
(2) Fabrication methods for cell components, complete cells, and stacks
(3) Cell designs, electrochemical performance, and modeling
(4) Stack designs and their performance
(5) Utilization of different fuels with or without reformation
(6) Stationary power generation, transportation, and portable power applications
(7) Prototype SOFC and SOEC systems, field test experience, cost, and commercialization plans
(8) High temperature electrolysis with SOECs
This symposium’s proceedings will be published in ECS Transactions and included with registration to all participants at the meeting. Authors accepted for presentation are strongly encouraged to submit their full text manuscript for the issue no later than March 17, 2023. The best of these will be invited for inclusion in a planned Journal of The Electrochemical Society focus issue on SOFCs.
