While society needs to approach or surpass net zero carbon emissions by 2050 if the planet as we know it is to survive, most of the low carbon technologies that we promote (such as electric vehicles) cannot achieve net zero when considered over their whole life cycle. It is, therefore, essential that these important low carbon technologies be augmented by technologies that consume more carbon than they emit over their lifetime. These are best termed “carbon negative technologies.”

This collaborative focus issue between JPhys Energy and Journal of The Electrochemical Society  brings together researchers from the international community to showcase the latest research on carbon negative technologies, fostering the exchange of ideas and addressing global challenges and opportunities.

Reviews, critical reviews (CRES3T), perspective, methods, communication, and research articles are solicited in the topical interest areas of Fuel Cells, Electrolyzers, and Energy Conversion and Physical and Analytical Electrochemistry, Electrocatalysis, and Photoelectrochemistry. Areas of interest include but are not limited to:

  • Nitrogen fixation
  • Biomass conversions
  • Biogas fuel cells
  • Biogas fuel cells
  • Direct air capture
  • Power-to-X
  • CO2 electrolysis
  • Direct carbon fuel cells

Papers on techno-economic analysis of relevant technologies are also welcomed.

Additional requirement

Submitting authors are asked to include a statement within the abstract or introduction of their submitted article that addresses the relevance to negative carbon technologies.

Accepting Submissions: May 26, 2023 | Submission Deadline Extended: January 31, 2024

Articles are published in a standard issue of the journal as they are accepted. If selected at submission, accepted papers are published online in the ECS Digital Library on IOPscience within 24 hours of scheduling for publication. The version of record is published online within approximately 10 days of final acceptance.
