The Electrochemical Society (ECS) welcomes nominations for the position of Editor-in-Chief (EIC) of the ECS Journal of Solid State Science and Technology (JSS). This vital leadership role is instrumental in shaping the future direction and impact of JSS, which publishes peer-reviewed original research across the broad scope of solid state science and technology, covering fundamental and applied areas of solid state science and technology, including experimental and theoretical aspects of the chemistry and physics of materials and devices.
About JSS
The ECS Journal of Solid State Science and Technology (JSS) covers topics related to solid state science and technologies including electronic materials, devices, and processes, with a strong focus on fundamental and applied research. Key topical areas include, but are not limited to:
- Carbon Nanostructures and Devices
- Dielectric Science and Materials
- Electronic Materials and Processing
- Electronics and Photonic Devices and Systems
- Luminescence and Display Materials, Devices, and Processing
- Solid State Sensors Principles
As Editor-in-Chief, the best candidate plays an essential role in guiding JSS’s editorial vision, ensuring the highest standards of peer review and scientific integrity, and maintaining the JSS’s commitment to innovation and academic excellence.
Responsibilities

Propose their vision for the JSS’s editorial organization structure to the Publications Subcommittee;

Employ diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) strategies;
-
Identify, interview, assess, and nominate qualified Editorial Board candidates to the Publications Subcommittee;
-
Lead a high-quality, rapid peer-review process;
-
Establish the JSS’s high impact and reputation by identifying prominent researchers in the wider international community and soliciting high-quality articles for JSS issues;

Solicit ideas, guidance, and input from ECS division leadership to accomplish the two tasks outlined above regarding building editorial organization and identifying high-impact articles for JSS issues;

Work closely with the Publications Subcommittee, ECS staff, and ECS’s publishing partner—the Institute of Physics Publishing (IOPP)—to ensure that all of JSS’s processes and protocols are properly established and stabilized.
Routine/ongoing responsibilities
The EIC, together with the Editorial Board, ensures JSS’s smooth operation and success. Responsibilities include:

Ensuring content quality, peer-review processing efficiency, and manuscript submissions lag time;

Achieving the highest possible figures of merit including impact factor;

Setting the content’s tone and editorial direction while maintaining all ECS publication internal policies;

Staying abreast of the latest technical developments in JSS’s technical scope and ensuring that new and emerging areas have a home in JSS and ECS;

Working with stakeholders to establish Editorial Board meeting agendas and reporting relevant issues to the Publications Subcommittee;

Representing JSS and the Editorial Board as a member of the Publications Subcommittee;

Nominating and overseeing Technical and Associate Editors;

Maintaining the highest possible research integrity and publishing ethics, transparency, openness, and best practices in scholarly publishing. ECS is a signatory to the Center for Open Science’s Transparency and Openness Promotion (TOP) guidelines and is a member of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE); EIC is expected to adhere to the policies and practices therein.
Qualifications/eligibility
In addition to possessing demonstrated expertise and international recognition in one or more of JSS’s technical areas and scope, the EIC must exhibit the top qualities of leadership, fairness, creativity, and motivation. The ideal candidate holds a strong international reputation; substantiates a commitment to the ECS mission; is absent from conflicts of interest; demonstrates a working knowledge and subscribes to the concepts embodied in ECS’s ethical standards, its publishing partner, and the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).
The EIC must be available to attend frequent JSS EIC teleconferences, meetings of the Editorial Board, and quarterly Publications Subcommittee meetings.
The EIC is expected to attend in person ECS’s two biannual meetings (typically in May and October).
Nomination process
Self nominations are encouraged. Nomination documentation must include the nominee’s most recent curriculum vitae (CV), a brief statement of the candidate’s qualifications including their vision for JSS, and the nominee’s most recent headshot image (high resolution 300). All nominations are reviewed by the ECS Publications Committee.
