Kelsey Anne Cavallaro

Kelsey Anne Cavallaro is a PhD candidate in the School of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) at the Georgia Institute of Technology, working with Professor Matthew T. McDowell. To engineer devices with improved performance in extreme environments, Kelsey’s research aims to understand the fundamental reaction mechanisms and morphological evolution of next-generation materials for lithium-based batteries at low temperatures. Her research is supported by a NASA Space Technology Graduate Research Opportunity Fellowship. As President (among other roles) of the Women in Materials Science and Engineering and a member of the university-wide Joint Sexual Violence Advisory Committee, Kelsey works actively to improve the Georgia Tech MSE community for women and underrepresented genders. Passionate about educating the next generation of scientists and engineers, she has lectured for multiple MSE classes, and serves as a member of the Center for Teaching and Learnings’ Tech to Teaching program.

Kelsey earned her BS in Chemical Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin where she researched novel electrode materials and architectures to improve performance of lithium-ion batteries. She enjoys martial arts, crafting, and reading with her cat.
