ECS Sensors Plus is publishing a focus issue on grand challenges and potential solutions in next-generation sensing and sustainability.
Sensing technology plays a pivotal role in achieving health and environmental sustainability goals, as outlined by the United Nations. To support these goals, sensors must deliver reliable, context-specific performance, allowing effective decision-making at critical points of need. In this regard, next-generation sensing technologies are emerging as a promising tool. These advanced systems integrate functionalized materials with tunable properties, miniaturized electronics, efficient data management, AI-driven algorithms, and sophisticated data analytics to enable intelligent decision-making and risk assessment. However, the concept of next-generation sensing, which represents a leap toward highly integrated, intelligent sensing solutions, remains underexplored due to its complex, multidisciplinary challenges.
The ECS Sensor Division and ECS Sensors Plus invites researchers to submit articles on all topical interest areas to the ECSSP: Focus Issue on Grand Challenges and Potential Solutions in Next Generation Sensing and Sustainability. Additional requirements
- Graphical abstracts are mandatory for submissions to ECS Sensors Plus (ECSSP). All graphical abstract files included with the submission must be in a JPEG, JPG, PNG, or TIF format, with the text “GA” as the prefix of the filename, e.g., “GA[filename].jpg”. Upload all graphical abstract files separately as source files. Select “source file” from the drop-down list when uploading files. Do not embed graphical abstracts in manuscript source files, nor as supplementary files or information.
- Highlights are mandatory for submissions to ECS Sensors Plus (ECSSP).
- Manuscript files submitted in Word: Highlights must be provided as separate Word documents named “Highlights”. Select “source file” from the drop-down list when uploading files.
- Manuscript files submitted in TeX: Highlights must be provided as separate TeX documents named “Highlights”. Select “source file” from the drop-down list when uploading files.
Accepting submissions: January 31, 2025 | Submission deadline: May 31, 2025
(Open Access Charges are waived for manuscripts accepted before September 30, 2025.)

Articles are published in a standard issue of the journal as they are accepted. If selected at submission, accepted papers are published online in the ECS Digital Library on IOPscience within 24 hours of scheduling for publication. The version of record is published online within approximately 10 days of final acceptance.
Visit the ECS website for author submission instructions and requirements for each article type.
OPEN ACCESS: Authors choosing to publish open access agree to pay an article processing charge (APC) if their papers are accepted. APCs are discounted by 75 percent for ECS members and waived for authors from ECS Plus subscribing institutions. Check if your institution subscribes to ECS Plus. Discounts are applied at the time of payment.
