Master Electrochemical Engineering: A Hands-On Workshop at CWRU

Electrochemical Engineering Workshop: From Fundamentals to Applications

June 2-4, 2025 | Case Western Reserve University | Cleveland, Ohio

Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) is pleased to present the Electrochemical Engineering Workshop: From Fundamentals to Applications, a comprehensive three-day program designed for professionals, engineers, and scientists seeking to build a strong foundation in electrochemistry and electrochemical engineering. This workshop is ideal for those with little to no formal training in the field who wish to develop the expertise necessary to excel in industry, academia, or national laboratories.

About the workshop

Held on the CWRU campus from June 2-4, 2025, this intensive program provides participants with practical knowledge of electrochemical system design and operation. Through a structured curriculum of 14 in-depth lectures, hands-on laboratory sessions, and specialized topic discussions, attendees gain a thorough understanding of key electrochemical engineering principles.

Curriculum highlights

Participants explore fundamental and advanced topics, including:

Electrochemical engineering principles

  • Introduction to electrochemical engineering
  • Electrochemical thermodynamics
  • Faraday’s law of electrolysis
  • Ionic electrolytes and behavior under electric fields
  • Current density at electrodes and in electrolytes
  • Overpotentials: Activation, Ohmic, concentration, and mass transport
  • Current distribution in electrochemical cells (primary, secondary, Wagner number)
  • Analysis of polarization behavior in electrochemical systems
  • Multiple electrode reactions (gas co-evolution, corrosion, mixed potential theory)
  • Transients in electrochemical systems (Cottrell and Sand equations)
  • Theory and practice of cyclic voltammetry
  • Numerical modeling of electrochemical systems
  • Porous electrode theory
