Profs. Isamu Akasaki and Nick Holonyak Jr. honored for development of LED lighting

Pennington, NJ – The Electrochemical Society (ECS) is proud to congratulate the 2021 Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering winners, Isamu Akasaki, Shuji Nakamura, Nick Holonyak, Jr., M. George Craford, and Russell Dupuis. The 2021 prize acknowledges their contributions from the initial creation and development of LED lighting its applications. The global impact of ubiquitous LED and solid state lighting has contributed tremendously to reducing energy consumption and addressing climate change. Akasaki, Nakamura, Holonyak, Jr., Craford, and Dupuis have interacted with The Electrochemical Society (ECS) throughout their careers, publishing much of their critical research in Society journals. The Electrochemical Society (ECS) Board of Directors and International Meeting on Chemical Sensors (IMCS) Organizing Committee announce that their upcoming meetings have moved to a digital platform and will not take place in Chicago, IL. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, it is not possible to host an in person meeting without risking the health and safety of meeting attendees and volunteers, ECS staff, and the public at large.

The 239th ECS and 18th IMCS meetings will be held as scheduled as fully digital events. Rather than travelling to Chicago, all presenting authors are requested to submit digital presentation files (video, and/or slide deck or poster) in advance of the meeting. These materials will be freely available to all global attendees for on-demand viewing throughout the meeting dates. (more…)

ECS Announces Brand Guide

To empower the unified and consistent use of The Electrochemical Society brand, the ECS Brand Guide has been posted online. Following the guidelines ensures that the brand—a critical asset that expresses the ECS persona, culture, and values—is known, respected, and esteemed throughout the world. The ECS global community shares the responsibility for, and integrity of, the Society’s brand.

The 2021 Society election is the first opportunity for ECS student members to help choose the new ECS President and 3d Vice President.  As previously reported, the Individual Membership Committee submitted a proposal to the Board of Directors to grant student members full voting rights. The proposal was approved by the Board of Directors in May 2020.

ECS President, Stefan de Gendt, says, “Students and early career professionals are vital to the health and long-term sustainability of the Society.  By providing these critical members the right to vote we give them a voice and the ability to directly participate in the governance of the Society.” (more…)

Western Digital provides NAND flash memory, drive devices-SDD (Solid State Drive) and HDD (Hard Disk Drive) to retail consumers, enterprises, and large-scale data centers. The company delivers top-level total storage solutions, developing and mass-producing multiple products, including WD® and SanDisk® brands. As part of ongoing integration activity, Western Digital is renaming certain legacy entities to align with the Western Digital name. Gerald Frankel, Ohio State University Professor and Journal of The Electrochemical Society Corrosion Science and Technology Technical Editor, is hosting CorroZoom, a webinar series focusing on corrosion science. In this time of relative isolation from professional colleagues and friends, CorroZoom seeks to build and maintain a worldwide community of scientists with mutual interests in the area of corrosion science. The webinar series is free to everyone in the world. CorroZoom is not associated with any professional organization or society. An informal organizing committee selected the speakers. Major function

Responsible for strategic planning and efficient operations of ECS’s publications, including the journals, Interface, ECS Transactions, and the ECS Digital Library, with the ultimate goal of maintaining and advancing the Society’s preeminence as a technical publisher. Leads efforts to ensure the effective acquisition of the most important research in our field and the broadest possible dissemination of this technical content; works with executive staff and volunteer leaders to curate ECS’s portfolio to ensure titles reflect the evolving technical and publishing needs of the community, and serves as the senior relationship manager for ECS’s publication-related committees and volunteers. Works closely with the senior staff and volunteer leaders to ensure ECS publications advance the mission and support the goals and objectives of the Society and provides outstanding management and leadership to direct and non-direct reporting staff on the ECS Publications team.
