The ECS Pacific Northwest Section is pleased to announce that Chih-Hsuan (Doris) Hung of the University of Washington received the 2023 Pacific Northwest Section Electrochemistry Student Award Sponsored by Thermo Fisher Scientific

The award recognizes Hung’s contributions to modeling, analysis, and design of three-dimensional Lithium ion batteries (LIBs) and her contributions to K-12 education through the development and dissemination of science and engineering educational materials with an emphasis on clean energy and inclusivity. The Electrochemical Society (ECS) named 15 new members to the 2023 Class of ECS Fellows. The designation “Fellow of The Electrochemical Society” was established in 1989 for advanced individual technological contributions to the fields of electrochemistry and solid state science and technology, and for service to the Society. Fellows are recognized for scientific achievements, leadership, and active participation in the affairs of ECS. Each year, their peers choose up to 15 renowned scientists and engineers for this honor.

Ralph E. WhiteThe ECS Honors & Awards Program and ECS Industrial Electrochemistry and Electrochemical Engineering Division are pleased to announce the new Industrial Electrochemistry and Electrochemical Engineering Division Ralph E. White Outstanding Student Award.

Ralph E. White

The award is named of longtime ECS member Ralph E. White, Professor of Chemical Engineering and Westinghouse Distinguished Scientist at the University of South Carolina (USC). In 1995, he founded the university’s Center for Electrochemical Engineering. Professor White has made significant contributions to the field of modeling and simulation of electrochemical systems. As a department chair and Dean at the University of South Carolina, he was instrumental in training the next generation of students, researchers, and colleagues who have gone on to make significant contributions in academia and industry.

The ECS Energy Technology Division recognized Yirui Zhang of Stanford University as the winner of the 2023 Energy Technology Division Graduate Student Award Sponsored by BioLogic at the 243rd ECS Meeting in Boston, MA. She presented her award talk, “Probing and Engineering Electrode-Electrolyte Interfaces in Electrochemical Energy Storage and Conversion” on May 30, 2023.

The Energy Technology Division Graduate Student Award Sponsored by BioLogic was established in 2012 to recognize and reward promising young engineers and scientists in fields pertaining to this division. The award is intended to encourage recipients to initiate or continue careers in this field. The winner receives a framed award certificate, USD $1,000 prize, and complimentary meeting registration. The recipient presents a lecture in an ETD division-sponsored symposium at the Society meeting where the award is presented.

The award recognizes promising young engineers and scientists in the field of electrochemical power sources in Canada. Recipients are students pursuing PhDs at Canadian universities in any area of science or engineering in which electrochemical science and technology and/or solid state science and technology are the central consideration. Through this award, the section encourages recipients to initiate or continue careers in the field.

After two years of digital ECS meetings, we returned to in-person meetings in 2022. We especially enjoyed recognizing award recipients in person, including some of our 2020 and 2021 winners.
