The Journal of The Electrochemical Society is publishing a focus issue in connection with the Multiscale Modeling, Simulation, and Design 5: In Honor of Ralph E. White symposium at the 243rd ECS Meeting.

This focus issue is in honor of Professor Ralph E. White on the occasion of his 80th birthday. Professor White made significant contributions to the field of modeling and simulation of electrochemical systems—including capacity fade prediction of lithium-ion batteries, efficient algorithms for battery models, and models for chlor alkali industries. Dr. White has received several international awards, including the 2013 ECS Olin Palladium Award for contributions to the science of electrochemistry, 2016 ECS Vittorio de Nora Award for contributions to the field of electrochemical engineering and technology, and 2018 Henry B. Linford Award for distinguished teaching. As a department chair and Dean at the University of South Carolina, he was instrumental in training the next generation of students, researchers, and colleagues who have gone on to make significant contributions in academia and industry.

The ECS Journal of Solid State Science and Technology is publishing a collection of papers on perovskite solar photovoltaic and photoelectrochemical cells.

To achieve carbon neutrality, perovskite solar photovoltaic and photoelectrochemical cells are promising technologies to catalyze the growth of solar energy deployment. As the power conversion efficiency of the laboratory-scale single-junction photovoltaic cell surpassed 25 percent, it attracted huge interest from the solar industry. Additionally, perovskites have recently emerged as promising next-generation photoelectrochemical photoelectrode materials. However, major challenges remain to be overcome before the industrialization of these promising solar technologies. The technical contents covered in this focus issue should provide important electrochemical and photophysical insights for the development of commercial perovskite photovoltaic and photoelectrochemical devices and systems.

Professor Baldassare (Rino) Di BartoloCall for Papers

The ECS Journal of Solid State Science and Technology is publishing a collection of papers dedicated to the contributions to the field of luminescence by Professor Baldassare (Rino) Di Bartolo.

Professor Di Bartolo recently retired after 50 years with the Department of Physics at Boston College. He was a dedicated teacher, prolific researcher, author of six books, and editor of over 25 volumes. His Optical Interactions in Solids remains a standard reference text in the field of luminescence. He is perhaps best known as the Director of the School of Atomic and Molecular Spectroscopy at the Ettore Majorana Foundation and Centre for Scientific Culture in Erice, Sicily, where he organized 23 summer schools and 11 workshops. The success of these meetings was due to Professor Di Bartolo’s ability to attract top researchers in the field, as well as his warmth, generosity, didactic teaching style, and desire to bring people together to enrich their lives and advance science. His legacy in luminescence continues through the graduate students and researchers trained in his laboratory and Erice schools and workshops.

The ECS Journal of Solid State Science and Technology is publishing a collection of papers on sustainable materials and devices.

Advanced materials are pervasive in sustainable energy storage devices, sensors, and actuators. These devices consist of multiple materials combined at multiple scales (from nano to submicrons) that actively interact during their functional history in a manner that controls their collective performance as a system at the global level. The principal motivation for this focus issue is to provide a place to publish the science that controls the properties in emerging energy storage materials, and sensors as a foundation for design of sustainable development for the next generation. This virtual issue focuses on papers covering the following topics:
