Dr. Thalia Standish

Dr. Thalia Standish

Congratulations to Thalia Standish of the University of Western Ontario for receiving the 2021 ECS Corrosion Division Morris Cohen Graduate Student Award. Each year, the division recognizes and rewards outstanding graduate research in the field of corrosion science and/or engineering. Such early recognition of highly qualified corrosion scientists and/or engineers is intended to encourage especially promising researchers to remain active in the field after their graduate research is completed.

Dr. Thalia Standish

Thalia Standish is a Research Scientist at Surface Science Western, where she conducts material analyses to advance academic research and help solve industrial problems. She received her PhD in Chemistry from Western University in 2019. Her graduate research focused on evaluating the galvanic corrosion behavior of copper-coated carbon steel for used nuclear fuel containers, using a combination of electrochemical techniques, x-ray micro-computed tomography (micro-CT), and surface analytical techniques. Dr. Standish is currently developing expertise in Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and thermal analysis techniques, focusing on polymeric materials in particular. First International Conference on Smart Green Connected Societies 2021 (ICTSGS-1)The First International Conference on Smart Green Connected Societies 2021 (ICTSGS-1) sponsored by ECS takes place virtually on November 29 and 30, 2021, JST.* This biannual conference, founded by Professors Hidemitsu Furukawa and Ajit Khosla of Yamagata University, Japan, is dedicated to the cause of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The purpose of the conference is to engage, bring awareness, and empower stakeholders such as students, scientists, academics, and industry at the grassroots level, thereby accelerating Ecosystem Restoration and SDGs.

Abstracts

Response to the call for abstracts has been overwhelming with more than 3317 submissions from 26 countries. After rigorous peer review by at least two experts, a total of 2011 abstracts were accepted for the conference, bringing the total acceptance ratio to 60.62 percent. (more…)

Symposium A05: Battery Recycling and Reuse

Extended Deadline for Submitting Abstracts:
December 17, 2021

Symposium focus:
From portable electronics to electric vehicles and renewable energy storage, batteries continue to deeply penetrate our daily life and industrial uses. With the rapid increase of battery usage, a huge amount of spent batteries will be generated in the coming years. At the same time, booming battery manufacturing will result in the resource shortage and price increase of critical metals such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, and copper. In addition, if not carefully treated, the flammable and toxic waste generated from the disposal of used batteries can cause severe environmental pollution. Therefore, it is highly desirable to develop efficient technologies to recycle and reuse batteries for the benefit of recapturing valuable materials and mitigating environmental pollution. In the past few years, significant effort has been made in the development of better designs and processes to enable sustainable battery recycling. This symposium provides a forum for scientists and engineers to communicate recent progress and exchange ideas in the area of battery recycling. Topics addressed in this symposium include, but are not be limited to: (more…)
