The publishing staff of The Electrochemical Society Interface is pleased to announce that with the addition to the ECS Digital Library of the four 1993 ECS Interface issues, plus the first Interface issue (winter 1992), more than 29 years of the ECS community’s history can be seen through the lens of Interface. The digitization of Interface was an 18-month project, focused on ensuring that Interface could be accessible to community members all over the world via a digital medium. (more…)
In light of rapidly escalating cases of the COVID-19 Delta variant across the US, and continuing travel restrictions on international visitors, The Electrochemical Society (ECS) Board of Directors determined that it is not possible to safely convene the upcoming ECS meeting in Orlando, FL, on October 10-14, 2021.
Instead, the 240th ECS Meeting will be a fully digital event. Rather than travelling to Orlando, all presenting authors are asked to submit digital presentation files (video, and/or slide deck or poster) in advance of the meeting. These materials will be freely available to all global attendees for on-demand viewing throughout the meeting dates. (more…)

The ECS Education Committee recently voted to combine the Short Course Subcommittee and Career and Professional Development Subcommittee into one committee: the ECS Continuing Education Subcommittee. The conjoined committee is looking for motivated individuals to help shape the future of continuing education opportunities for the ECS community.
As the fields of electrochemistry and solid state science and related technologies continue to evolve, so do the educational needs of our community. COVID-19 changed education dramatically, forcing a precipitous shift away from the classroom to online learning. While face-to-face education can never be completely replaced, certain aspects of online learning are here to stay.
Be part of the dialog on how the Society maintains its preeminence in continuing education in electrochemistry and solid state science and related technologies—and meets the challenges of an ever-changing education landscape!

The ECS Industrial Electrochemistry and Electrochemical Engineering (IE&EE) Division recognizes and rewards promising young engineers and scientists in the fields of electrochemical engineering and applied electrochemistry with two special awards. Congratulations to Akshay Subramaniam who received the IE&EE Division Student Achievement Award, and Eric McShane, winner of the IE&EE Division H. H. Dow Memorial Student Achievement Award.
The IE&EE Division Student Achievement Award was established in 1989. The IE&EE Division H. H. Dow Memorial Student Achievement Award was established in 1990 with a gift from the Dow Chemical Company Foundation to encourage recipients to continue careers in electrochemical engineering or applied electrochemistry. Both awards require that nominees describe a research project that they will pursue during the award year, and how that project relates to the field of electrochemical engineering or applied electrochemistry. The recipients of the awards each receive a framed certificate and US $1,000 prize. The IE&EE Division H. H. Dow Memorial Student Achievement Award restricts use of the award to expenses associated with the recipient’s education or research project, i.e., tuition, books, equipment, or supplies. (more…)

The ECS Pacific Northwest Section hosted Dr. Dong Ding’s live online webinar, “Electrochemical processing at intermediate temperatures (400-600°C),” on June 24, 2021. Answers to questions posed during the presentation follow.
Dr. Dong Ding is a senior staff researcher at Idaho National Laboratory (INL), where he leads a group of researchers in electrochemical processing and electrocatalysis for clean energy storage and conversion. He is a principal investigator for multiple projects including direct funded and Laboratory Directed Research & Development. Dr. Ding is also an adjunct professor in the departments of Chemical & Materials Engineering at New Mexico State University and University of Idaho. He received his PhD in Material Science and Engineering at the University of Science & Technology of China and was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of West Virginia and National Energy Technology Laboratory (2009-2010), and at the Georgia Institute of Technology (2010-2014). He has 89 peer-reviewed publications and holds three U.S. patents and 11 patent applications. (more…)
