Symposium A05: Battery Recycling and Reuse

Extended Deadline for Submitting Abstracts:
December 17, 2021

Symposium focus:
From portable electronics to electric vehicles and renewable energy storage, batteries continue to deeply penetrate our daily life and industrial uses. With the rapid increase of battery usage, a huge amount of spent batteries will be generated in the coming years. At the same time, booming battery manufacturing will result in the resource shortage and price increase of critical metals such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, and copper. In addition, if not carefully treated, the flammable and toxic waste generated from the disposal of used batteries can cause severe environmental pollution. Therefore, it is highly desirable to develop efficient technologies to recycle and reuse batteries for the benefit of recapturing valuable materials and mitigating environmental pollution. In the past few years, significant effort has been made in the development of better designs and processes to enable sustainable battery recycling. This symposium provides a forum for scientists and engineers to communicate recent progress and exchange ideas in the area of battery recycling. Topics addressed in this symposium include, but are not be limited to: (more…)

The ECS Journal of Solid State Science and Technology is publishing a focus issue on Emerging Trends in CMP. Chemical Mechanical Planarization (CMP) is a widely accepted global planarization technology that has been deployed by integrated circuit (IC) manufacturers across the globe. It is considered a critical and enabling step in IC manufacturing. A CMP process requires a correct combination of CMP consumables such as slurry, pad, pad conditioner, and cleaning chemistries, along with equipment and end point technology. As device fabrication advances to sub-7 nm nodes, it is critical that advances in CMP can meet future challenges for these advanced CMP processes. A lot of research is being performed in the CMP area. This focus issue is intended to bring high quality research articles to the scientific community.

The Electrochemical Society hosted Prof. Raphaële J. Clément’s live online webinar, “From order to disorder: NMR insights into ionic conduction in battery materials,” on October 27, 2021. Below are answers to questions posed during the presentation.

NOTE: Registration is required to view the webinar.

Raphaële Clément is an Assistant Professor in the Materials Department at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), U.S. She received her PhD in Chemistry in 2016 from the University of Cambridge, UK, working under the supervision of Prof. Clare Grey. Her doctoral work focused on the study of layered sodium transition metal oxide cathodes for Na-ion secondary batteries. She then joined Prof. Gerbrand Ceder’s group at the University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley), U.S., focusing on cation-disordered rock salt oxyfluorides for Li-ion battery applications. She joined the UCSB faculty in 2018. Her primary research focus is the development and implementation of magnetic resonance techniques (experimental and computational) for the study of battery materials and beyond, with a strong emphasis on operando tools. She is an Associate Editor for Battery Energy, a new open access journal by Wiley. (more…)
