The Journal of The Electrochemical Society invites submissions for a 2022 Focus Issue centered on energy storage research in China. Under the Paris Agreement, China committed to peak its CO2 emissions and to supply 20 percent of its energy demand using non-fossil sources by 2030. Energy storage technologies are required in order to promote renewable energy sources utilization and economic performance. China’s energy storage research develops rapidly, especially in the field of “beyond lithium-ion” technologies. This focus issue aims to present transformational advances in scalable energy storage to go beyond the current state of the art lithium-ion batteries. (more…)

The Electrochemical Society mourns the passing of Nobel Laureate and long-term member, Isamu Akasaki, on April 1, 2021.

“The world knew Isamu Akasaki as the pioneering scientist who invented the blue LED. At the Society, we came to know him on a more personal level during his 35-plus years of membership. We tracked the extraordinary progress of Professor Akasaki’s research at ECS meetings and in ECS journal articles. We also noted his remarkable humility and how he always credited his success to the support of co-researchers, students, and colleagues. Prof. Akasaki was both a leader in the field, and mentor to a generation of scientists following his lead in finding solutions to reducing global dependence on fossil fuels,” said Christopher Jannuzzi, ECS Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer. The ECS Journal of Solid State Science and Technology is publishing a focus issue dedicated to the memory of Professor George Blasse: Recent Developments in Theory, Materials, and Applications of Luminescence. On December 30, 2020, Prof. Blasse passed away unexpectedly at the age of 86, in Munich, Germany, where he lived since his retirement in 1996. Prof. Blasse was highly recognized internationally and shaped the field of luminescent materials research. He combined groundbreaking fundamental discoveries with societal relevance including the discovery of the phosphor that enabled white light LEDs. He had a deep and also intuitive understanding of luminescence phenomena, and often relied on clever chemical variations in host composition and structure to obtain insight into the underlying physics of luminescence and energy transfer phenomena of ions in solids.
