This is a guide for electrochemists interested in understanding and validating the DC accuracy of their potentiostats. To begin, it’s important to understand how to properly interpret the specifications of the potentiostat to calculate the expected accuracy of current and voltage measurements. Keep in mind that accuracy, precision, etc., also depend on the device under test (DUT). A reliable measurement can’t be obtained from a DUT whose electrochemical properties are in constant flux. Aqueous Battery Chemistry: Considerations from a Reaction’s Perspective – Webinar Q&A with Prof. Ji
Posted on March 15, 2021 by Keerthana VaradhanECS and the ECS Pacific Northwest Section presented Prof. Xiulei “David” Ji’s webinar, “Aqueous Battery Chemistry: Considerations from a Reaction’s Perspective” on March 4, 2021. His answers to questions following the presentation are provided below. The webinar is now available for viewing.
Xiulei “David” Ji is an Associate Professor of Chemistry at Oregon State University, U.S. His research focuses on design principles of materials chemistry for electrochemical energy storage. Ji received a 2016 NSF CAREER Award and was a Web of Science Group Highly Cited Researcher in 2019 and 2020. He is currently an Associate Editor of Carbon Energy. He completed his PhD in Materials Chemistry at the University of Waterloo, Canada, in 2009. From 2010-2012, he was an NSERC Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of California, Santa Barbara, U.S.
“Aqueous Battery Chemistry: Considerations from a Reaction’s Perspective” summarizes five dimensions of considerations for the design of storage battery chemistries from a chemical reaction’s point of view. Different types of batteries including rocking-chair batteries, dual-ion batteries, and reverse dual-ion batteries are discussed. Ji also reviews recent conceptual advances on storage batteries that employ non-metal charge carriers such as proton, ammonium, halides, and superhalides.

The Vittorio de Nora Award was established in 1971 to recognize distinguished contributions to the field of electrochemical engineering and technology.
The award consists of a gold medal and plaque with a bronze replica, both bearing the recipient’s name; US $7,500; complimentary meeting registration for the award recipient and companion; a dinner held in the recipient’s honor during the designated meeting; and Life Membership in the Society. The award is bestowed at the 241st ECS Meeting from May 29 to June 2, 2022, in Vancouver, Canada. The recipient delivers a general address at that meeting on a subject related to the contributions for which the award is being presented. (more…)
Alex Peroff Looks on the Bright Side
Last spring, when the Society spoke with Alex Peroff, PhD, Electroanalytical Scientist at Pine Research, we were impressed by his positive attitude in the face of the challenges posed by the pandemic. We wondered if, after a year of living under COVID-19 restrictions, he was still as upbeat. The short answer: yes! The long answer follows.
Life not on the road
Before 2020, Peroff traveled extensively. Since spring 2020, he’s worked from home. “My only travel was to drive to Pine’s Pennsylvania facility last summer. There were a lot of social distancing protocols to make sure that everything was safe. Before, everyone worked together on a first shift. Now there are two shifts. I don’t think there’s going to be much safe travel until more people are vaccinated and the numbers of new cases significantly decrease. It’ll be a slow process.”
ECS Webinar Follow-Up Q&A with Dr. Yan Yao: Next-generation Batteries for Electric Vehicles and Stationary Storage
Posted on March 9, 2021 by Keerthana VaradhanThe Electrochemical Society hosted Dr. Yan Yao’s live webinar, “Next-generation Batteries for Electric Vehicles and Stationary Storage” on February 24, 2021. Yao is a Cullen College of Engineering Professor at the University of Houston (UH), U.S.
Yao has led research on the fundamental study of energy storage materials and devices, spanning from solid state batteries for electric vehicles to multivalent ion batteries and aqueous batteries for grid energy storage. He has authored more than 110 journal articles with 25,000 citations and holds 10 U.S. patents. A Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and Senior Member of the National Academy of Inventors and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Yao received the Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Award (2013), UH Teaching Excellence Award (2016), UH Research Excellence Award (2018), Top 1% Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher (2018), and Scialog Collaborative Innovation Award (2018 and 2020). Yao founded the ECS University of Houston Student Chapter in 2016, and continues to serve as the chapter’s Faculty Advisor.
NOTE: Registration is required to view the webinar.
ECS thanks Hiden Analytical, the generous sponsor of Dr. Yan Yao’s webinar. (more…)
In December of 1992, the premiere issue of The Electrochemical Society Interface was published. Over 100 issues later, the quarterly Society magazine continues to provide scholars with the latest technical articles in solid state and electrochemical science and technology, and news and information about and for ECS members. Many of you may have these treasured back issues on your bookshelves. For those who do not, ECS has taken on the project of digitizing Interface issues from 1992-2009. To date, ECS staff has worked in conjunction with IOP Publishing to digitize 2007, 2008, and 2009. As always, the issues will be available through the Interface website. (more…)
