The ECS Colin Garfield Fink Summer Fellowship assists a postdoctoral scientist or engineer to pursue research from June through August. The fellowship includes $5,000 and recognition in the ECS Blog and Interface. It is named in honor of Colin G. Fink, ECS president from 1917-1918.

To qualify for the fellowship, applicants must be a current postdoc and a Society member in good standing.

On November 11, 2020, Jie Xiao, Laboratory Fellow and Group Leader of the Battery Materials & System Group, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, and Arkansas Research Alliance Scholar & Associate Professor, Inorganic Chemistry, University of Arkansas, presented “Electrochemistry in Rechargeable Lithium Metal Batteries” via a live webinar presentation hosted by The Electrochemical Society.

Xiao’s talk covered the electrochemistry underlying Li metal dendrite growth; pouch cell level understanding of Li dendrites and their implications in cell performance; and bridged the scientific gap between academic research and industry needs.

The Chemical Sciences Roundtable is hosting a workshop exploring laboratory automation which can provide chemists and other scientists with the ability to create libraries of new compounds efficiently in unprecedented time. The promise of laboratory automation is much more realistic today with recent advances in various technologies than in years past. As technology improves, however, one must consider how best to automate the laboratory and train next-generation chemists, chemical engineers, materials and formulation scientists, and others. When the Washington Post publicized the launch of North America’s first all-electric, zero-emissions boats, they referred to an authoritative article on battery safety in the Journal of The Electrochemical Society. The introduction of two electric Maid of the Mist tour vessels at Niagara Falls heralds a new era in maritime travel. The boats, which run on dual banks of lithium ion batteries charged with hydro-electric power supplied by the Robert Moses Niagara Power Plant, are a zero-emission operation. ECS IE&EE Division member Prof. Mark Orazem (Department of Chemical Engineering, University of Florida) and his student William Watson published their ground-breaking impedance spectroscopy measurement model program, “EIS: Measurement Model Program.” It is available at no cost (for non-commercial use) on ECSarXiv, the Society’s free online service for preprints and other preliminary communications. Orazem began working on the program in the early 1990s. His undergraduate student, William Watson, provided the final key—using Python—to make distribution of the program viable. (more…)
