Ram Manthiram urges the science community to step up

In our series, The ECS Community Adapts and AdvancesArumugam “Ram” Manthiram urges the science community to be proactive in confronting the pandemic and climate change challenges threatening the global community. Ram is Director of the Texas Materials Institute and the Materials Science and Engineering Program at the University of Texas Austin (UTAUS). He holds a co-appointment as the Joe C. Walter Chair in Engineering and Jack S. Josey Professor in Energy Studies. Ram’s research group focuses on the design and development of affordable, efficient, durable materials for electrochemical energy conversion and storagespecifically, batteries and fuel cellsto address global energy and environmental challenges. The Carl Wagner Memorial Award was established in 1980 to recognize mid-career achievement, excellence in research areas of interest to the Society, and significant contributions in the teaching or guidance of students or colleagues in education, industry, or government.

The award consists of a silver medal and a corresponding wall plaque; $7,500 (USD); complimentary meeting registration for the award recipient and companion; a dinner held in the recipient’s honor during the designated meeting: and Society Life Membership. The next Wagner Award will be recognized at the 239th ECS Meeting in Chicago, Illinois, in October 2021. There the recipient will deliver a general address on a subject related to the contributions for which the award is being presented. (more…)

Saket Bhargava

The ECS Industrial Electrochemistry and Electrochemical Engineering Division Student Achievement Award recognizes and rewards promising young engineers and scientists in fields pertaining to this division. This year’s recipient, Saket Bhargava, is a PhD student in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). His work with Paul Kenis’ research group focuses on using flow electrolyzers to develop system-level process intensification approaches and studying the effects of intensified process conditions on the activity, selectivity, and energy efficiency for CO2 electroreduction to value-added chemicals. His award talk is titled, “System-Level Approaches for Intensifying the CO2 Electrolysis Process.”

The IEEE Division Student Achievement Award was established in 1989. It includes a framed certificate and $1,000 (USD) prize. The annual nomination deadline is September 15. (more…)

UPDATE: In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the 11th International Frumkin Symposium on Electrochemistry has been postponed until October 2021 (expectedly October 18-22).

The symposium organizing committee hopes to proceed with the symposium in its originally planned format on this later date.

The symposium website, as well as the registration and abstracts submission engine, will remain fully operational so that previously submitted materials are kept active.

Francis D’Souza

Dr. Francis D’Souza, Distinguished Research Professor of Chemistry at the University of North Texas (UNT), is one of the most recent recipients of the prestigious Chemical Research Society of India (CRSI) Medal. The award recognizes, promotes, and fosters talent in Chemistry and Chemical Sciences in order to improve the quality of Chemical Education at all levels.

Dr. D’Souza, an ECS member since 1993 and ECS Nanocarbons Division member since 2014, says he is honored to receive recognition from his motherland, in an article by UNT.

“Previous awardees have been from top-rated institutions across the globe. Getting this award while at UNT is something special for me,” says Dr. D’Souza.
