Call for Nominations: Editor-in-Chief

ECS Sensors Plus

The Electrochemical Society (ECS) is seeking candidates to serve as the founding Editor-in-Chief (EIC) of ECS Sensors Plus, a journal in the process of being launched in 2021.

ECS Sensors Plus is a multidisciplinary, open access journal that provides an international platform to publish high-quality impactful articles and promote scholarly communication and interactions among scientists, engineers, and technologists whose primary interests are focused on mechanisms, materials, structures, properties, performance, and characterization of sensing and detection devices and systems, including sensor arrays, networks, and actuators. The goal of ECS Sensors Plus, as a one-stop shop journal for sensors, is to advance the fundamental science and understanding of sensors and detection technologies for efficient monitoring and control of industrial processes and the environment, and improving quality of life and human health.

The Electrochemical Society mourns the passing of Nobel Laureate and long-term member, Isamu Akasaki, on April 1, 2021.

“The world knew Isamu Akasaki as the pioneering scientist who invented the blue LED. At the Society, we came to know him on a more personal level during his 35-plus years of membership. We tracked the extraordinary progress of Professor Akasaki’s research at ECS meetings and in ECS journal articles. We also noted his remarkable humility and how he always credited his success to the support of co-researchers, students, and colleagues. Prof. Akasaki was both a leader in the field, and mentor to a generation of scientists following his lead in finding solutions to reducing global dependence on fossil fuels,” said Christopher Jannuzzi, ECS Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer. Electrochemistry in Orbit

Guest blog by Dr. Alyson Lanciki, Scientific Editor, Metrohm International

For over twenty years now, there has been continuous human occupation off our planet.

The International Space Station (ISS), launched in 1998, is a modular satellite in low orbit around the Earth, which is visible even with the naked eye.

In October, NASA launched an Antares rocket carrying a Cygnus resupply ship. This cargo ship carried an experimental system on board used to study the oxidation of ammonia under microgravity conditions to convert urine into water on the ISS. Improving this waste management system has far-reaching repercussions for longer exploratory missions where the weight of the payload must be optimized with the amount of water needed (which is heavy) to sustain life during the trip. Given the limited resources aboard a spaceship, the recovery of water from all processes is of great importance. (more…)

The Electrochemical Society (ECS) Board of Directors and International Meeting on Chemical Sensors (IMCS) Organizing Committee announce that their upcoming meetings have moved to a digital platform and will not take place in Chicago, IL. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, it is not possible to host an in person meeting without risking the health and safety of meeting attendees and volunteers, ECS staff, and the public at large.

The 239th ECS and 18th IMCS meetings will be held as scheduled as fully digital events. Rather than travelling to Chicago, all presenting authors are requested to submit digital presentation files (video, and/or slide deck or poster) in advance of the meeting. These materials will be freely available to all global attendees for on-demand viewing throughout the meeting dates. (more…)

Logistics may not be top-of-mind when thinking about electrochemical and solid state manufacturing processes, but one failed shipment can throw an entire production schedule off target. Specialty chemicals, such as atomic layer deposition (ALD) precursors for the manufacture of thin films, are considered hazardous materials (hazmat) and therefore require special care and preparation for transportation. Gerald Frankel, Ohio State University Professor and Journal of The Electrochemical Society Corrosion Science and Technology Technical Editor, is hosting CorroZoom, a webinar series focusing on corrosion science. In this time of relative isolation from professional colleagues and friends, CorroZoom seeks to build and maintain a worldwide community of scientists with mutual interests in the area of corrosion science. The webinar series is free to everyone in the world. CorroZoom is not associated with any professional organization or society. An informal organizing committee selected the speakers. If the series is successful and the need persists, more speakers will be added. (more…)
