June, July, and August will be here before you know it! These are great months to advance your research—and you may be eligible for financial support. Graduate students should apply now for an ECS Summer Fellowship, post-graduates for the Colin Garfield Fink Fellowship. These grants provide funding in June through September for graduate students and postdocs pursuing work in a field of interest to The Electrochemical Society. (more…)

Nominations sought for 2022 speakers

The ECS San Francisco Section hosted its Inaugural Young Investigator Lecture Series on November 19, 2021. Over the course of the three-hour virtual session, attendees were treated to 10 short presentations by senior graduate students and postdocs from California universities. The talks covered a wide range of electrochemistry research, from lithium-ion batteries to CO2 reduction, fundamental examinations of ion transport, and charge transfer kinetics.

Electrochemistry is the magic that binds together the many fields that excite Professor Bilge Yildiz, ECS Awarded Life Member and recipient of the 2012 ECS Charles W. Tobias Young Investigator Award—and invited speaker in the 241st ECS Meeting Symposium I05: Mechano-Electro-Chemical Coupling in Energy Related Materials and Devices 4. Prof. Yildiz was named a 2021 Fellow of the American Physical Society for “innovative contributions to understanding and manipulating ionic defects and charge transport at electro-chemo-mechanically coupled oxide interfaces and devices.” (more…)

The US Department of Energy (DOE) recently announced $15 million for fundamental research or early-stage technology development of new bioimaging or sensing approaches that use quantum phenomena.

Supported efforts will advance research on plant and microbial systems relevant to bioenergy and environmental research. Projects will explore quantum science concepts that promise to enhance image resolution and provide new ways for repetitive imaging to detect fragile samples without damaging them, produce cleaner pictures, and use light beyond the visible range to see unknown features of biological shape and movement. First International Conference on Smart Green Connected Societies 2021 (ICTSGS-1)The First International Conference on Smart Green Connected Societies 2021 (ICTSGS-1) sponsored by ECS takes place virtually on November 29 and 30, 2021, JST.* This biannual conference, founded by Professors Hidemitsu Furukawa and Ajit Khosla of Yamagata University, Japan, is dedicated to the cause of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The purpose of the conference is to engage, bring awareness, and empower stakeholders such as students, scientists, academics, and industry at the grassroots level, thereby accelerating Ecosystem Restoration and SDGs.

Abstracts

Response to the call for abstracts has been overwhelming with more than 3317 submissions from 26 countries. After rigorous peer review by at least two experts, a total of 2011 abstracts were accepted for the conference, bringing the total acceptance ratio to 60.62 percent. (more…)

Electric VehicleThe U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) recently announced $209 million in funding for 26 new laboratory projects focusing on electric vehicles, advanced batteries, and connected vehicles. DOE’s Argonne National Laboratory introduced Li-Bridge, a new public-private partnership to bridge gaps in the domestic lithium battery supply chain. Advanced lithium-based batteries play an integral role in 21st century technologies such as electric vehicles, stationary grid storage, and defense applications that are critical to securing a clean energy future. The projects support goals to make the United States a global leader in electric vehicle and battery innovation; advance the development of these technologies to save families money; lower carbon pollution; and create high-quality jobs.
