Abstract
Lithium-Sulfur (Li-S) batteries have been the subject of R&D for over 50 years with relatively few successes in the marketplace. However, in the last ~10years there has been a resurgence of interest due to the promise of extremely low-cost and high-performance energy storage, and the potential to benefit from the ongoing “renaissance” in Li-metal anode technologies. Li-S also avoids many issues related to scale and supply chain when compared to nascent technologies. Despite these advantages, R&D has lagged and performance still falls short of power and cycle life required for mass market adoption in electromobility applications. Li-S technology is presented holistically, starting with fundamental chemistry through cell design and engineering. The presentation closes with discussion on recent approaches to mitigating the hurdles of Li-S as well as Conamix’s technology perspective and portfolio for driving Li-S performance while keeping the focus on low cost and scalability.
Student poster awards
Students are encouraged to present posters as up to three posters will be presented at this event. The first three students contacting ecs.detroit.rsvp@gmail.com about presenting their work receive $100 and one year of free access to ECS Detroit Section events.
About Stephen Burkhardt
Stephen Burkhardt is the Chief Technology Officer at Conamix. Dr. Burkhardt has over 15 years in electrochemical energy storage R&D with roles at General Electric, DuPont, and now Conamix. His industrial research experience covers a broad range of topics in energy storage including electrolyte design for Li-ion batteries, high-temperature batteries and solid electrolytes, and packaging and thermal management materials for traction battery packs. He has researched Li-S chemistry for five years with Conamix, starting as Director of R&D in 2018. An inventor on over 40 granted and pending patent families related to technologies for Li-based batteries, Dr. Burkhardt has commercialization experience for global products. He earned his PhD in Electrochemistry from Cornell University studying under Prof. Héctor Abruña.
