Join the ECS San Diego Student Chapter and the ECS San Francisco Section for Dr. John Muldoon’s November 17, 2023, presentation, “An Odyssey Through the Uncharted Waters of Post Lithium-Ion Batteries.”

Abstract

Advanced energy storage technologies such as lithium-ion batteries have enabled the development of ubiquitous portable electronic devices and are critical to the development and widespread adoption of practical electric vehicles. While lithium-ion batteries represent the most advanced energy storage technology currently available commercially, the desire for significant improvement in energy density and cost has led to a strong interest in so-called “beyond lithium-ion” batteries such as sodium, lithium-air, lithium-sulfur, multivalent batteries, and solid-state batteries. In this talk, I guide you on an odyssey toward post li-ion batteries. We travel through the peaks and valleys of multivalent, lithium-sulfur, and all-solid-state batteries.

Dr. John Muldoon received a BSc (Hons) in chemistry from Queens University of Belfast in 1997. In 2002, he completed his PhD at the University of Notre Dame under the direction of Prof. Seth Brown, specializing in organometallic chemistry. He worked as a research associate at Scripps Research under Prof. Barry Sharpless (2001 and 2022 Nobel laureate in Chemistry ) and Prof. Valery Fokin, establishing early applications of click chemistry. Dr. Muldoon is currently a senior principal scientist at the Toyota Research Institute of North America (TRINA). He has consistently contributed to the company’s sustainable mobility platforms, studying materials for fuel cells, batteries, and carbon dioxide capture and conversion solutions. His outstanding research leadership has been instrumental in establishing Toyota’s beyond-lithium-ion battery research programs, shaping global research trends on multivalent-ion, lithium-sulfur, and solid-state lithium metal batteries. He has received over 6000 citations and holds more than 35 patents.

Dr. Muldoon is a Fellow of the Electrochemical Society (ECS), Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), and recipient of the 2023 ECS Battery Division Technology Award. He is an active member of ECS and the RSC, ACS, and MRS. As a member of the ECS Battery Division, Dr. Muldoon was instrumental in establishing symposia on beyond-Li-ion battery research. Advocating for the development of younger scientists, he cultivated the relationship between the ECS and Toyota, which resulted in establishing the ECS Toyota Young Investigator Fellowship in 2016.
