Focus Issue on Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer Research and Teaching: In Honor of Diane K. Smith

The Journal of The Electrochemical Society is publishing a focus issue in connection with the Advances in Organic and Biological Electrochemistry: In Memory of Diane Smith symposium held at the 245th ECS Meeting in San Francisco, CA, from May 26-30, 2024. This focus issue is dedicated to the scientific topics that inspired Diane K. Smith, professor for 30 years in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at San Diego State University.

Prof. Smith made significant contributions to teaching and research in electrochemistry. The first woman hired into a tenure track position in her department, her research greatly influenced a variety of electrochemical research topics, including organic electrochemistry, supramolecular chemistry, catalysis, and electrochemical energy storage. She was a renowned mentor for members of our community and an outstanding educator.

“The major goal of research in my group is to develop a complete understanding of the different mechanistic paths through which electron and proton transfer can be coupled together in reversible organic redox reactions, with a particular emphasis on the role that hydrogen bonding is playing in these mechanisms. This knowledge is of fundamental significance, but it also allows us to do some interesting and practical chemistry,” said Diane K. Smith.

The ECS Organic BioElectrochemistry (OBE) Division and the OBE topical interest area of the Journal of The Electrochemical Society invite researchers to submit research and review articles on proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) research related to:

  • Mechanisms

  • Electroanalytical methods

  • Reversible organic redox reactions

Perspectives on teaching electrochemistry are also welcome.

Articles are published in a standard issue of the journal as they are accepted. If selected at submission, accepted papers are published online in the ECS Digital Library on IOPscience within 24 hours of scheduling for publication. The version of record is published online within approximately 10 days of final acceptance.

Visit the ECS website for author submission instructions and requirements for each article type.

OPEN ACCESS: Authors choosing to publish open access agree to pay an article processing charge (APC) if their papers are accepted. APCs are discounted by 75 percent for ECS members and waived for authors from ECS Plus subscribing institutions. Check if your institution subscribes to ECS Plus.
