The Journal of The Electrochemical Society invites submissions for a 2022 Focus Issue centered on energy storage research in China. Under the Paris Agreement, China committed to peak its CO2 emissions and to supply 20 percent of its energy demand using non-fossil sources by 2030. Energy storage technologies are required in order to promote renewable energy sources utilization and economic performance. China’s energy storage research develops rapidly, especially in the field of “beyond lithium-ion” technologies. This focus issue aims to present transformational advances in scalable energy storage to go beyond the current state of the art lithium-ion batteries.
This virtual issue focuses on papers covering the following topics:
- Research in Li and Na solid state batteries, including development of solid electrolytes, cell design and manufacturing, and interfacial engineering and characterization;
- New concepts and demonstration of multivalent batteries including electrode materials and electrolyte development;
- Research of inorganic and organic redox flow batteries including design and fabrication of membrane, electrochemistry of reactions in anolytes and catholytes, and strategies addressing critical aspects of operation;
- First principles simulations and machine learning models for battery and electrolyte materials.
Reviews, critical reviews, and perspective papers welcomed.
Accepting submissions: July 22, 2021 | Submission deadline: October 20, 2021
(When submitting, indicate that the paper is intended for the Energy Storage Research in China focus issue.)

Articles are published in a standard issue of the journal as they are accepted. If selected at submission, accepted papers are published online in the ECS Digital Library within 24 hours of scheduling for publication. The version of record is published online within approximately 10 days of final acceptance.
OPEN ACCESS: As part of the Author Choice Open Access program, authors can select to have their papers published as open access. If open access is selected at the time of submission, authors must agree to pay an article processing charge (APC) if the paper is accepted. ECS members receive a 75 percent discount on all APCs. All discounts are applied at the time of payment. Authors from ECS Plus subscribing institutions are eligible to have APCs waived. Check if your institution subscribes to ECS Plus.
