The Electrochemical Society is providing a technical sponsorship for The Sustainable Energy Research Conference, “Future Fuels and Breakthrough Batteries.” The event occurs November 11-12, 2024, at the Friday Conference Center in Chapel Hill, NC. Learn more!
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC_CH) Sustainable Energy Research Consortium (SERC) has held eight conferences since 2012, either as standalone meetings or as symposia synergistically aligned with a regional ACS meeting. This year, there are sessions on four themes in energy storage:
-
Solar to Fuels
-
Electricity to Fuels
-
Ammonia and Bio-based Fuels
-
Batteries
This event promises to be a bright revitalization of the SERC conference series and a forum for regional and national scientists to discuss key energy storage advances and opportunities. View the conference schedule.
Speakers
As electrochemistry is foundational to all of these areas, a range of electrochemical methods and advances is highlighted. Confirmed speakers include emerging or established leaders, including:
-
Daniel Nocera, Harvard University
-
Jillian Dempsey, UNC-CH
-
Hemali Rathnayake, University of North Carolina at Greensboro
-
Veronica Augustyn, North Carolina State University
-
Scott Warren, UNC-CH
-
Caroline Saouma, Virginia Tech
-
Miaofeng Chi, Duke University
Speakers from the State of North Carolina are in focus, reflecting a goal to build regional community and connect academic researchers with local industry. Young voices are highlighted in the event, with two graduate students and two postdoctoral scholars to be selected from poster abstracts. A special professional development session for early career researchers is featured. This session aims to discuss the importance of scientific writing in multiple career paths, including scientific publishing and industrial chemistry.
Panel
A panel discussion on emerging electrochemical energy (battery) technologies and industries in the state of North Carolina is a highlight at the end of the conference. The panel explores topics such as energy storage research capabilities, needs, and trends in the state of North Carolina. Panelists include:
-
Jeff Warren, North Carolina Collaboratory
-
Lin Ma, North Carolina Battery Complexity, Autonomous Vehicle and Electrification Center (BattCave), UNC-CH
-
Hemali Rathnayake, Minerva Lithium LLC
