ECS is pleased to announce the winners of the Society’s 2017 young author awards: Raymond Smith and Shihyun Ahn.
ECS presents two young author awards each year to recognize the best papers published by young authors in the Journal of The Electrochemical Society and the ECS Journal of Solid State Science and Technology during the volume year preceding the award.
The 2017 young author awards will be presented at AiMES 2018 in Cancun, Mexico, September 30-October 4, 2018.
Norman Hackerman Young Author Award
The second-oldest Society award, the ECS Norman Hackerman Young Author Award was established in 1928 to recognize the best paper published by a young author or young coauthors in the Journal of The Electrochemical Society on a yearly basis.
The award’s namesake, Norman Hackerman, was a world-renowned scientist, an outstanding educator, a highly successful administrator, and a champion of research who served as president of ECS from 1957-1958.

The 2017 Norman Hackerman Young Author Award will be presented to Raymond Smith for his paper “Multiphase Porous Electrode Theory.”
Raymond Smith earned his PhD in chemical engineering from MIT in 2017 with a minor in computational materials science. While a graduate student, he worked with Martin Bazant on various projects involving mathematical modeling of electrochemical systems. His primary focus involved developing models for battery electrode materials with phase separation behavior, coupling them to full porous electrode battery models, and validating those models with the help of experimental collaborations.
Smith also participated in the MIT Chemical Engineering Practice School program, both as a student and as a station director. In this program he was involved in high-intensity, short-term industrial consulting collaborations on a widely diverse set of projects at Corning, BP, MedImmune, and Emirates Global Aluminum.
Smith earned his undergraduate degree from Clemson University. For the past year, he has been working as an engineer at Tesla, focused on battery performance and lifetime modeling.
Bruce Deal & Andy Grove Young Author Award
The ECS Bruce Deal & Andy Grove Young Author Award was established in May 2013 to recognize the best paper published by a young author or young coauthors in the ECS Journal of Solid State Science and Technology on a yearly basis.
This award is named in honor of Bruce Deal and Andy Grove, coauthors on a paper published in the Journal of The Electrochemical Society that introduced the Deal-Grove model, which mathematically describes the growth of an oxide layer on the surface of a material. The Deal-Grove model is used to analyze thermal oxidation of silicon in semiconductor device fabrication and has had a lasting influence on the semiconductor technology industry.

The 2017 Bruce Deal & Andy Grove Young Author Award will be presented to Shihyun Ahn for his paper “Temperature-Dependent Characteristics of Ni/Au and Pt/Au Schottky Diodes on β-Ga2O3.”
Shihyun Ahn received his BS and MS degrees in chemical engineering from Carnegie Mellon University and earned his PhD degree from the University of Florida in May 2017. His research focused on the effect of irradiation damage on GaN-based metal-oxide semiconductor high-electron mobility transistors and β-Ga2O3.
His research area also includes the processing and characterization of III-V compound semiconductors. He authored or coauthored over 20 papers during his PhD studies.
Ahn is currently working in the Ultraviolet Product Development Department at Seoul Viosys in Korea.
ECS congratulates the two winners and looks forward to watching their careers flourish both within the Society and within their respective fields of research.
