Call for Nominations: Technical Editor for JSS

JSS CoverDeadline: June 14, 2017

ECS is seeking to fill the position of Technical Editor in the Dielectric Science & Materials Topical Interest Area for the ECS Journal of Solid State Science and Technology (JSS).

The Dielectric Science & Materials (DSM) Topical Interest Area (TIA) includes theoretical and experimental aspects of inorganic and organic dielectric materials, including electrical, physical, optical, and chemical properties. Specific topics include growth processes; reliability; modeling and property measurements; polarizability; bulk and interfacial properties; interphases; reaction kinetics; phase transformations; thermodynamics; electric and ionic transport; polymers; high k, low k, and embedded dielectrics; porous dielectrics; thin and ultra-thin films.

JSS has been in existence since 2012. It was created as an outgrowth of the Journal of The Electrochemical Society (JES) to deal more exclusively in solid state topics. JES and JSS provide unparalleled opportunities to disseminate basic research and technology results in electrochemical and solid state science and technology. JSS publishes a minimum of 14 regular and focus issues each year. All ECS journals offer author choice open access.

ECS maintains 13 TIAs, and there is one Technical Editor (TE) for each TIA, supported by Associate Editors and an editorial advisory board. TEs for the ECS journals ensure the publication of original, significant, well-documented, rigorously peer-reviewed articles that meet the objectives of the relevant journal, and are within the scope of the Society’s TIAs.

The Society’s TE actively solicit manuscripts for their TIAs through being involved in their technical community, engaging the ECS divisions, and working with the staff to effectively communicate to their TIA’s stakeholders. TEs ensure an efficient and fair peer review process and minimize lag time of manuscript submissions. They work to recruit and select editorial reviewers. TEs are required to adhere to policies and procedures for: (a) manuscript submission and authorship criteria; (b) peer review, evaluation of decisions regarding publication, and methods for reconsideration of rejected manuscripts; (c) maintaining the scientific integrity and confidentiality of the peer review process; (d) the identification and recommendation of theme/focus issues and supplements; (e) handling conflict of interest and disclosure issues; and (f) handling allegations and findings of scientific misbehavior and misconduct. TEs must clearly communicate publication guidelines and policies and oversee compliance. TEs also serve on the governing bodies of the Society’s divisions, to ensure synergy between content in the ECS meetings and publications programs.

TEs serve as members of their respective editorial boards and attend the ECS biannual meetings. They work collaboratively with the Editors, the Publisher, and the Director of Publications to accomplish the objectives approved by the Publications Subcommittee and the ECS Board of Directors.

Nominees for the DSM TE must possess and maintain scientific knowledge of the scope of the DSM TIA. Nominees must have qualities of leadership, integrity, technical breadth, creativity, motivation, and international reputation, and should be able to commit the necessary time to ensure efficient and effective performance of their duties. The TE oversees the review and disposition of manuscripts within his/her TIA, and works to develop content for the regular and special issues. A yearly honorarium is offered by the Society. Nominees must have published previously in a Society publication. They must be skilled in the arts of writing, editing, critical assessment, negotiation, and diplomacy. TEs may not serve on the editorial boards of any non-ECS peer-reviewed technical journal. TEs must adhere to the Society’s code of ethics policies. Preference will be given to candidates who are ECS members.

A TE is appointed for a minimum of a two-year term, renewable for additional terms, up to a maximum of twelve years total service as a TE.

If selected as a finalist, the candidate is expected to be available for webinar interviews with the Publications Subcommittee in July 2017. The Technical Affairs Committee will approve the appointment of the DSM TE in August 2017.

Full applications are due no later than June 14, 2017.Those interested should send (a.) a letter indicating their qualifications for the position, stating why they are interested in the position, giving their previous experience with peer-reviewed journals, and noting of their availability of their time to fulfill the duties of this position; and (b.) a one-page résumé. Send all materials to ECS headquarters, to the attention of Mary Yess, ECS Chief Content Officer, mary.yess@electrochem.org.
