ECS’s honors and awards program recognizes scientific excellence in electrochemical and solid state science. Every year, ECS presents two young author awards for the best papers published in both the Journal of The Electrochemical Society – ECS’s flagship journal, published continuously since 1902 – and the ECS Journal of Solid State Science and Technology.

Mark Burgess and Kenneth Hernández-Burgos from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign will receive the Norman Hackerman Young Author Award for best paper published by young authors in the Journal of The Electrochemical Society. Peng Sun from University of Michigan will receive the Bruce Deal & Andy Grove Young Author Award for best paper published by a young author in the ECS Journal of Solid State Science and Technology.

This year’s young author awards will be presented at the 232nd ECS Meeting in National Harbor, MD, Oct. 1-5, 2017.

Norman Hackerman Young Author Award

The Norman Hackerman Young Author Award was established in 1928 for the best paper published in the Journal of The Electrochemical Society on a topic in the field of electrochemical science and technology by a young author.

This year’s Norman Hackerman Young Author Award will be presented to Mark Burgess and Kenneth Hernández-Burgos for their paper “Scanning Electrochemical Miscroscopy and Hydrodynamic Voltammetry Investigation of Charge Transfer Mechanism on Redox Active Polymers.”

“Receiving this award has helped illuminate to the larger scientific community the science I worked on during my graduate studies,” says Burgess. “This award is especially significant to me because it recognizes my very first scientific publication. Winning this award for my first ever paper illustrates that my young scientific career is off to a strong start, and I hope to continue in this legacy of excellence.”

The award’s namesake, Norman Hackerman, was a world renowned scientist, an outstanding educator, a highly successful administrator, champion for basic research, and president of ECS from 1957-1958. Past recipients of this award include Larry Faulkner, Stanley Whittingham, and Hubert Gasteiger.

“Receiving the Norman Hackerman Award is an honor for me, not only because of its significance in the field, but because of the great group of people that have previously received it,” says Hernández-Burgos. “This gives me the confidence to keep working hard and contributing to the world of electrochemistry and, like them, set a good example for the scientists of tomorrow.”

Bruce Deal & Andy Grove Young Author Award

The Bruce Deal & Andy Grove Young Author Award was established in 2013 for the best paper published in the ECS Journal of Solid State Science and Technology on a topic in the field of solid state science by a young author.

This year’s Bruce Deal & Andy Grove Young Author Award will be presented to Peng Sun for his paper “Toward Practical Non-Contact Optical Strain Sensing Using Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes.”

“I am very happy and honored about getting such great recognition from ECS,” Sun says.

This award is named in honor of Andy Grove and Bruce Deal, co-authors on a paper published in the Journal of The Electrochemical Society describing the Deal-Grove model which mathematically describes the growth of an oxide layer on the surface of a material. The Deal-Grove model is used to analyze thermal oxidation of silicon in semiconductor device fabrication and has had a lasting influence on the semiconductor technology industry.

“The encouragement from ECS is like the light on the academic path for me and other young scholars,” Sun says.
